Nov 20, 2015· Kenya’s Mining History . Kenya has a long history with gold mining although, for many years, gold mining was not done on a commercial scale. The mining of gold in Kenya can be traced back to 1882 when the first gold was discovered in western Kenya at a place called Lolgorian on the border of the Rift Valley and Nyanza provinces.
Karebe Gold Mining Limited (KGML) operates three separate mines in Western Kenya; Equatorial, Rock Corry and Boma Mines. Gold was first discovered in the region in the 1940’s, during which time a number of small scale mines were developed in the area.
In most large scale commercial mining operations, the recovery of gold can be a complex task based on a detailed characterisation of the geology and mineralogy of the ore to determine how best to liberate the gold. In Kenya the process is somewhat simpler.
The Ministry of Mining of the Republic of Kenya is a Kenyan government ministry that oversees the Mineral sector in the country. The Ministry was established as an independent ministry after the 2013 general elections. The government realized that the mining industry had the potential to spur the countries economic growth.
